In trying to do it yourself, you must take be careful when boiling solvents off as the whole process is immensely flammable. Please avoid smoking, stove-tops, heat guns, sparks and red-hot heating elements. Place a fan to blow fumes away from the pot, as well as setting up in a well-aired and ventilated are for the entire process. - Place the thoroughly dry material into clean bucket. - Dampen the material with the solvent being used. Many solvents are workable here, although avoiding petroleum solvents would be advantageous. You can use butane, 99% isopropyl alcohol, ethanol or even plain old water. - Do a second wash by adding solvent to the mix and work for another 3 minutes to take away the remaining THC.
- Pour the solvent oil mix into the bucket with the first mix that was poured out before.
- Get rid of the plant material that's now been washed twice.
- Pour the solvent oil mix through a coffee filter into a clean container.
- Boil the solvent off with a rice cooker which will also hold over 1/2 gal. of solvent mix. DANGER: avoid sparks, cigarettes, open flames, red-hot elements, and stove-tops because the fumes can be immensely flammable.
- Next, add solvent to the rice cook until about 3/4 full and immediately turn on high heat. You must now check and ensure you're in a well-ventilated area before also setting up a fan to carry the solvent fumes away from you. Keep adding mixture to the cooker as the solvent evaporates once you have added it all to the cooker.
- Once the level in the rice cooker decreases for the last and final time, add a few drops of water (about 10 drops of water/pound of dry material). This aids in releasing the solvent residue while also protecting the oil from too much heat.
- When about 1" of a water/solvent mix in the rice cooker, put on oven mitts and pick up the unit and swirl the contents until the solvent has finished boiling off.
- When the solvent has completely boiled off, put the cooker on LOW heat. At no time should the oil ever reach over 290°F or 140°C.
- Please keep your oven mitts on and remove the pot with the oil from the rice cooker. Gently pour the oil into a stainless-steel container.
- Put the stainless-steel container in a dehydrator, or place it in a gentle heating device like a coffee warmer. It could take a few hours but the volatile terpenes and water will be evaporated from the oil. When there is no longer any surface activity on the oil, it's ready for use.
- Finally, suck the oil up in a plastic syringe or any other viable container that works. A syringe makes the oil easy to get rid of. When the oil cools down thoroughly, it should have the consistency of thick grease.
